Today J Dilla would have been 41 years old and most likely still banging out the best instrumentals in hip hop. While we all hope he’s resting in paradise, it’s always nice to remember Dilla on his born day. This day has always been sort of a celebration online for all of Dillas fans, where people share their favorite tracks and talk about his impressive catalog of work. There will never be another J Dilla and we will never forget so be sure to pay your respect today to the one and only Jay Dee.
While your at it, check out this cool mixtape that Okayplayer posted earlier today.
Okayplayer is very pleased to bring the world premiere of the “Bangin Like A Dilla Instrumental” mix, an hour-long set of the choicest Pay Jay joints, all of them instrumental and many of them very rare. The mix was composed by an all-Miami crew of DJ Manuvers, DJ Sharpsound and LouiArson. The trio come from the Chocolate Sundays collective and put in brilliant work to honor J Dilla. The mix features The Pharcyde’s “Be Like That,” the Slum Village classic “Fall In Love,” Jay’s solo cut “So Far To Go,” and a rare remix of “Stakes Is High,” the greatest De La Soul track ever made. Before, after, and between these cuts you’ll hear rare micro-joints plucked from the legion of Dilla beat tapes that have been recovered. It’s a top-shelf mix of some of the best hip-hop ever made, and the perfect send on an early “happy birthday” to the greatest producer to ever do it. We miss you, Jay, and we’ll never stop treasuring to your gifts.
