The Boondocks Announces Season Three Premiere Date
The Boondocks, the award-winning animated Adult Swim series based on Aaron McGruder’s comic strip by the same name, returns this spring for its third season. After taking a two year hiatus, creative and executive producer McGruder announced on his twitterfeed (@aaronmcgruder) that the third season premiere of The Boondocks will air on Sunday, May 2nd at 11:30 p.m. (ET/PT) on Adult Swim. The series, produced by Rebel Base in association with Sony Pictures Television, includes the vocal talents of Regina King (”Southland”) as Huey and Riley Freeman; John Witherspoon (”Friday After Next”) as Granddad; Gary Anthony Williams (”Boston Legal”) as Uncle Ruckus; Cedric Yarbrough (”Reno 911″) as Tom Dubois; Jill Talley (”American Dad”) as Sarah; and Gabby Soleil (”Johnson Family vacation”) as Jazmine.
Dr. Hip Hop:This was supposed to be on what supposed to be Dilla’s major label album, Pay Jay, off MCA. Sad when good music is kept from the fans, but at least in this day and age the one upside to all the leaks and torrents is when greedy big labels get screwed on holding on to good music. This is an example of this, as here is one of the 2 versions Pete Rock did, featuring Bilal. I had to include Bilal in this (a close second was Think Twice off his Welcome to Detroit album) tribute month, and yet another classic artist he worked with, Pete Rock.
Dr. Hip Hop:So, Jay Dee a.k.a. J Dilla was part of a little musical collective called The Soulquarians, which included such amazing talents as, James Poyser, ?uestlove, Bilal, Common (Sense), Erykah Badu, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Q-Tip, and D’Angelo. It reminds me of the Native Tongues or Likwit Crew, collectives who were simply amazing when looking at who comprised it; but collectives who never really put anything out under the name. We were lucky enough for them all to have collaborated on each others’ works, which is good enough for me; but only leaves one wondering what could’ve been. I understand it’s a business, but cmon people…it’s also an art, your love, and we the fans create your existence as paid (very well at times) and successful artists. Maybe it would’ve been too many cooks in the kitchen, but tangentially it reminds me of artists today being lazy and putting out half-ass stuff when it only takes a little more effort to make something worth buying. At least with The Soulquarians we were lucky enough, though, to have them put out such high quality art when they were collaborating.
Oh yea.. I dig. Probably the best remix of this song I have heard yet! Also don’t even start hating.. I know this is not hip hop lol. Take your girlfriend dancing for a fucking change!
Recently, the public got a taste of what’s to come from the partnership of Sanctioned and MetroPCS. The communications provider allowed three titans of street art to leave their mark on retail stores in the Harlem and the Bronx. West Coast legend Mister Cartoon hooked up with two East Coast heavyweights, Cope2 and Sen2, to deliver a powerful message.
Fully bombing the windows, the artists left their calling card for the morning commuters to marvel at. Take a look while you can: 115th & Lexington in Harlem; E. Fordham and E. Kingsbridge Road in the Bronx; 3rd and E.151 in the Bronx.
After a short break, we’re back with the latest edition of Okayplayer TV. Who better to bring back OKPTV than one of our most favorite groups, Reflection Eternal. Live from the set of RE’s upcoming video, “In This World,” OKP chops it up with Kweli and Hi-Tek about The RE:Union, why they took so long to come out with a new album, gettin’ props from Jay-Z (and turning it into a hook), and more. Look for the video “In This World” to drop next week. Reflection Eternal’s new album, Revolutions Per Minute will be out April 6th. Shout out to Sidik Fofana for the interview, episode filmed and edited by Noisemaker Media.
Dr. Hip Hop: Another old school remix J Dilla did for a classic group. If you don’t know about The Artifacts, you’re sleeping! Their track Wrong Side of the Tracks is one of those classics right up there with ‘93 til Infinity. This was off their second album, but both are classics. Too bad they couldn’t stick together longer, but El da Sensei resurrected his career and dropped some nice albums and Tame One, while I may not like his post-Artifacts work as much, has dropped some nice stuff via albums and collaborations (most recently with Del Tha Funky Homosapien).
